Q. What is the Israeli Standard?
A. Everything you wanted to know about the relevant Israeli Standard is listed below:
Speed up to 25 kph.
Combination of a motor and peddling: As opposed to a motor cycle, the rider moves his or her legs, whether at the beginning of the trip or when the top speed of 25 kph is reached and the rider wishes to go faster.
A lithium battery, which is far better quality than regular acid batteries used by cars. The life span of the battery is far greater and the battery’s performance is better than an acid battery over the long term. There are 3 types of lithium batteries on the market. They differ mainly by the total number of charges as well as in other parameters. Do not be tempted to buy cheap lithium batteries just because they are lithium.
Motor output up to 250 watt.
Minimum riding age: 16 years.
Q. Installing a kit on an existing bicycle – Yes or No?
A. This question is asked by many potential buyers. Why not buy a kit and fit it to an existing bicycle?
Fitting a kit is only feasible in exceptional cases, such as:
The construction of a special bicycle pursuant to the specific customer requirements with special requisites.
Adapting a bicycle to people with physical disabilities.
If a rider really likes his bike and wants to electrify it.
Generally, all kits imported into Israel are smuggled in. The installer / vendor requires proof that the product has been approved by the Ministry of Transport and the Israeli Institute of Standards.
If you do not have an Israeli Standard mark nor authorization from the Ministry of Transport, there is no oversight on your imports.
You need to trust am importer who considers your good and not only his bottom line. The question is why get involved in such an escapade in the first place.
If you ride a bicycle that has not been approved by the Ministry of Transport, you are committing a criminal offence. Is it worth the trouble? Will the Government insurance cover you in the case of an accident, heaven forbid, or will the insurance company look for a way to not pay you and this gives them a good excuse!!
Is there a difference in cost between a good compliant bicycle and a kit and installing it?? It is doubtful. Generally kits that are brought in are general and are not tailored for a specific bicycle. The result is a situation of an unsuitable power ratio.
The majority of motors are fitted to the front wheel. If the motor is not suited to that specific model, a situation of deficient control and imbalance could ensue. This is a hazardous situation! There are very few experts in the industry who are able to adapt a particular kit to a particular bicycle.
This is expertize which should not be taken lightly!
To summarize: Legally, it is generally prohibited. From the practical and economic aspects: in 95% of the cases, a kit is not worthwhile and is not suitable.
In addition, a severe warning was published to this effect in The Marker Magazine dated February 9, 2011.
